A seminar on the major films of Luchino Visconti, Robert Bresson, and Jean-Marie Straub (and Daniele Huillet) and their literary sources. All three filmmakers made important and eccentric adaptations of major literary texts.

Reading/Writing assignments:
Three hours of film screenings, approximately seventy pages of reading each week. Three short papers (approx five pages) one each on a film not discussed in seminar by Visconti, Bresson, and Straub/Huillet.
