Perform in the Princeton Dance Festival on the beautiful Berlind Theater stage!
Thursday, September 13, 2018
Hearst Dance Theater, Lewis Arts complex
All Princeton students welcome.
Audition for a guest choreographer’s work for the chance to perform in the annual Princeton Dance Festival, to be held on November 30-December 2, 2018. Auditions are available with choreographers Marguerite Hemmings and Cyrstal Pite (staged by Alexandra Damiani). All Princeton student dancers are encouraged to audition! Please note, a student may only be cast in one guest choreographer’s work.
Experimental Dancehall Lab looks at popular music and dances from Jamaica and the African Diaspora (i.e. Haiti, Ghana, Nigeria) with a focus on freestyling as a technique, social and solo practice, and the most essential part of being a dancer. Students will explore and challenge their limits through the lens of dancehall music and dance, but also through the dance-hall as any site where social dance takes place, studying what music, dance, and social practices come out of these discoteca, club, and backyard spaces. We will look at different dancehall music and movement patterns and techniques and apply methods of the dance-hall in exploring these patterns and techniques.
Rehearsals for Hemmings’ new piece will take place Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:30 p.m.
