A 6-year-old boy in Florida, an 11-year-old in New Orleans, and a 5-year-old in Jamaica all banned from school because of their hair. Military personnel and workers in corporate environments required to hide or destroy their Afro-textured hair by use of harmful chemicals. These are just the stories for the past few weeks. People of African descent are the only group of people specifically required to alter their hair to participate in “the-mainstream” despite the psychological and physical repercussions to do so. Not only that, most people outside of this group are aware this is happening. At rates like never before, people are pushing back legally to fight for the right to participate in society “as we are.”

Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Gillian Scott-Ward, addresses this topic in her internationally screened & award-winning documentary Back to Natural.

Back to Natural reveals the shocking truth about hair, politics, and racial identity in Black communities and beyond. Filmed in New York City, Philadelphia, Paris, And Cape Town, this documentary is powerful call for healing that takes a grassroots approach to exploring the globalized policing of natural Black hair, universal aspects of the Black experience and the “New” Natural Hair movement.

Using documentary film as a vehicle for healing and social justice, join us in this workshop where we can screen the film, process the issues, and discuss the creation and importance of multiculturally-affirming spaces for all.
