Please join us for a reading and conversation with Domenico Starnone, one of Italy’s most acclaimed novelists, his translator into English, Jhumpa Lahiri, and Mark Reynolds, the editor-in-chief of Europa Editions, distinguished publisher of quality fiction from around the world, including Starnone’s work and the celebrated novels of Elsa Ferrante.

Ties is the story of a marriage. Like many marriages, this one has been subject to strain, to attrition, to the burden of routine. Yet it has survived intact. Or so things appear. The rupture in Vanda and Aldo’s marriage lies years in the past, but if one looks closely enough, the fissures and fault lines are evident. Their marriage is a cracked vase that may shatter at the slightest touch. Or perhaps it has already shattered, and nobody is willing to acknowledge the fact. Domenico Starnone’s thirteenth work of fiction is a powerful short novel about relationships, family, love, and the ineluctable consequences of one’s actions.

Known as a consummate stylist and beloved as a talented storyteller, Domenico Starnone is an Italian writer, screenwriter and journalist. He was born in Naples and lives in Rome. His previous books include First Execution and Via Gemito, winner of Italy’s most prestigious literary prize, the Strega. Jhumpa Lahiri is the author of four works of fiction: Interpreter of Maladies, The Namesake, Unaccustomed Earth, and The Lowland. She has received numerous awards, including the Pulitzer Prize, a 2014 National Humanities Medal, awarded by President Barack Obama, and the Premio Internazionale Viareggio-Versilia, for In altre parole (In Other Words), which appeared in English translation last spring. Ties is the first novel she has translated from the Italian. Michael Reynolds is Editor-in-chief of Europa Editions.
