Martha Graham founded contemporary dance in this country as we know it today, and together with Picasso, Stravinsky, and Balanchine, stands as one of the true artistic giants of the 20th century. Although the company she founded in 1926 is still going strong, it hasn’t been to McCarter in a decade! In the course of the 181 works she created, Graham conveyed the depth of human emotion by creating her own vocabulary of movement which remains unique to the company of dancers who continue to carry the torch. Their McCarter program will incorporate a representative cross-section of Graham’s genius, including Diversion of Angels, Cave of the Heart, and Errand into the Maze. Suffice it to say that seeing Graham at least once in your lifetime is an essential artistic experience and not to be missed.

The performance will take place in the Matthews Theatre at McCarter Theatre Center on Wednesday, November 5 at 8:00 p.m., with a pre-concert lecture given by Artistic Director Janet Eilber at 7:00 p.m. This event is cosponsored by the Program in Dance and McCarter Theatre Center. Tickets are available through the McCarter box office by calling 609.258.2787 or at mccarter.org.
