Princeton University Players is proud to present HAIR, directed by Cat Andre ’17 with book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado and music by Galt MacDermot. A groundbreaking and controversial musical, HAIR brings the free-love generation back to life with memorable characters and truly iconic music. In it, the validity of the all-love, all-pleasure lifestyle of a hippie tribe is called into question by one of its members, Claude, when he is drafted to join the war effort in Vietnam. Drowning in questions of conventional morality, Claude spirals into a deep, psychedelic, existential crisis that forces him to the brink of making the ultimate sacrifice. HAIR embodies a distinct moment in American history when the sexual revolution met the cry for socio-political change under the banner of free love. In a world still torn apart by war, hatred and ignorance, we need to be reminded of the importance of love and the individual’s ability to bring it into the world, so make sure to see this affective, fun and powerful show.

The February 26 performance will be followed by a special talk back hosted by Theater and Gender and Sexuality Studies Professor, Stacy Wolf, that will discuss the history, controversy and relevance of HAIR to our society.

HAIR is generously sponsored by the Program in Gender and Sexuality Studies, the Program in American Studies and by Princeton University’s Lewis Center for the Arts.
