A new short story by fiction writer and Lecturer in the Program in Creative Writing Fiona Maazel appears in the summer 2015 issue of Ploughshares. The issue features fiction selected by Lauren Groff, acclaimed novelist and short story writer. As Groff writes in her introduction, “I am searching for work that is written with blood or bile or choler, not necessarily sweat alone.” The wildly imaginative stories in the summer issue explore humanity through the bizarre and unexpected, including Maazel’s work, “Dad’s Just a Number.”

Fiona Maazel is the author of two novels: Last Last Chance (2008) and Woke Up Lonely (2013), with her third novel, What Kind of a Man, forthcoming from Graywolf Press in the fall of 2016. She is winner of the Bard Prize for Fiction, recipient of a Lannan Foundation Residency, and a National Book Foundation “5 Under 35” honoree. Her fiction has previously appeared in Book Forum, GQ, The New York Times, This American Life, Tin House, The Village Voice, and elsewhere.

The Summer 2015 issue of Ploughshares is available now in print and in digital format on pshares.org.
