In our media-saturated world, it is impossible to escape that quintessential journalistic exercise, the interview. Politicians, artists, athletes, and the anonymous masses all take turns performing on its demanding stage. Intrusive and relaxed, combative and complacent, posthumous and imaginary, sententious and burlesque in turn, the interview is a game, a stage, a dance floor where two subjects meet. But, in the era of democratized chatter, the challenge is to keep the interview true.

Judith Henry and Nicolas Bouchaud take turns asking and answering questions. In doing so, they use a colorful palette of interview tropes to lead us on a meandering journey which, despite its overuse, still has the potential for emotional revelation. Somewhere between a lion’s den and a therapist’s office, the well-executed interview creates a place where speech flows freely.

Journalist and essayist Nicolas Truong leads Le Monde’s “Idées-Débats” section. He also directs the “Controverses du Monde” program at the Avignon Theater Festival, and he has co-authored many books, most recently Le Crépuscule des intellectuels français? (L’Aube, 2016). This Interview is his second foray into philosophical theater; his first, Projet Luciole, was presented at Seuls en Scène in 2014.
