Advanced Screenwriting: Writing for Television

Students in this advanced screenwriting course will work both independently and in small groups to learn how to develop, pitch, outline, and draft an original television show. We will read and watch television shows, pitch ideas, work in writers’ rooms, and by the end of the semester have a complete draft of a television pilot in hand (50-60 pages). There will be weekly reading, viewing, and writing assignments — everything from conceptualizing ideas to writing outlines and character profiles. Given that television is a collaborative medium, students should feel comfortable working in small groups.

Sample reading list:
David Benioff & D.B. Weiss, Game of Thrones
JJ Abrams & Damon Lindelof, Lost
Terence Winter, Boardwalk Empire

Reading/Writing assignments:
Weekly writing assignments. 60 pages of reading per week

Other Requirements:
