Introductory Poetry

Practice in the original composition of poetry supplemented by the reading and analysis of standard works. Criticism by practicing writers and talented peers encourages the student’s growth as both creator and reader of literature. This class is open to beginning and intermediate students by application.

Reading/Writing assignments:
One manuscript per week is submitted. Reading of other students’ submissions in advance of workshop in which they are to be discussed. Other assigned readings or exercises. 20-75 pages per week.

Other information:
Individual conferences are scheduled at intervals during the semester. There are no exams. Students may begin the Creative Writing Sequence with either CWR 201 or 202.
