Producing Theater: French Festivals Today

The course will explore the creation, production, management and future of pioneering international festivals from France’s main historic festivals, such as Festival d’Avignon and Festival d’Automne, to more recent and emerging ones worldwide. It will use Seuls en Scène, Princeton French Theater Festival, as a case study. Students will bring together their newfound knowledge and devise their own festival as final course project. Leaders in the field will join us in the seminar to share their experience and discuss the roles of festivals nowadays, and the ways such collective gatherings can help us wrestle with the burning issues of the days.
