La Gran Cumbia Espectacular: ¡Acompáñanos para una noche teatral llena de diversion y comunidad!

Join us for a night of theater, full of fun and community!

We invite you, the audience, to come dance and celebrate with us! Originating along Colombia’s Río Magdalena, cumbia (a rhythm/dance/music genre, with African and Indigenous roots) has since come to serve as a means of home-making through its ability to traverse music, memory, and migration across many Latin American countries and parts of the United States. This show celebrates cumbia and community, journeying through three styles of cumbia: cumbia folklórica colombiana (traditional Colombian folk dance), cumbia wepa, (a style that originated in Monterrey, México) and cumbia tejana (a social dance that originated in Texas). We will teach the audience how to dance cumbia, and share what cumbia and our communities mean to us. We welcome you into our community and hope you will come to our perfectly imperfect roller skating/quinceañera/Selena/zumba/horror/drag/pop/zombie community block party. Come find out what the heck this all means! ¡A celebrar! ¡A divertirse! ¡A compartir con nuestra comunidad! Conceived and directed by senior Kaelani Burja with choreography by guest artist Andrea Guajardo. We hope you will come dance with us soon.

*If comfortable, come dressed to move/dance. Audience participation is encouraged, but by no means required. Audience members who would rather watch the show and not participate are welcomed and equally celebrated.
