McCarter Theatre Center has announced a participatory community reading of Emily Mann’s Greensboro: A Requiem on McCarter’s Matthews Stage on Wednesday, November 14 at 6:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public, but RSVP required.

Community play readings are interactive, round-robin format readings in which everyone gets a chance to read aloud. No experience or preparation is necessary at all. The reading will be followed by a group discussion of the experience of the play in relation to contemporary concerns and events.

Greensboro: A Requiem is a 1996 documentary play written by McCarter’s Artistic Director and Resident Playwright Emily Mann. The work was inspired by the killings of five anti-Ku Klux Klan demonstrators in Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1979. The play—crafted entirely from verbatim interview material, courtroom transcripts, and personal reminiscences of the people involved—examines historical, yet timely, issues of social justice, white supremacism, hate speech, and racially motivated violence.

Please RSVP to ensure your seat. McCarter community play reading events are free and open to the public. Free for Princeton students through Passport to the Arts using your Tiger Tickets. Copies of the play will be provided at the event.

This special reading event is presented in connection with the mission of The Ghostlight Project, which aims to create spaces that serve as “beacons of light” which are committed to diversity and inclusion. Organizations connected to The Ghostlight Project pledge to stand for and protect the values of inclusion, participation, and compassion for everyone regardless of race, class, religion, country of origin, immigration status, (dis)ability, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
