real lies is an original production choreographed and directed by Princeton seniors James Jared and William Keiser that explores a multitude of dichotomies — discipline/pleasure, internal/external, and performer/audience, among others — through dance. Uniting the story of Pinocchio with a study of artistry and performance, two casts and two choreographers share one stage in an evening of thought-provoking entertainment.

Free and open to the public, however advance ticket reservations are encouraged. Tickets are available at the Frist Campus Center ticket office or online at tickets.princeton.edu.

#TellUsTigers: “I’ve been a choreographer ever since I made up dances in my bedroom and a dancer almost my entire life. At Princeton, I am an electrical engineering major and am pursuing a dance certificate. While my engineering interests are academic, I see dance as a part of my identity. My dance thesis project, called ‘real lies,’ explores how aspects of my identity and the more commercial techniques I grew up with fit into the concert dance world. As such, the performance is somewhat an expression of my identity, filtered by the platform of dance, aesthetics and the bodies of the dancers. Part of this expression is the incorporation of dancing in heels, as worn in this photo by three of the dancers — Caroline Bailey ’20 (@scbailey_23), Sophie Blue ’21 (@sophiebluedancer) and Jonathan Golden ’22 (@jgolden33). I enjoy the jazzy style of heels choreography and was eager to include it, but as a gay man whose life is saturated in gender and sexuality analysis, I wanted for once to ignore the intellectualization of my identity, and instead exercise my ability to create without complex critique. As a result, the show indirectly explores gender identity and fluidity, but only because my life intrinsically contains those themes. I am extremely grateful for the Program in Dance at #PrincetonU for offering an environment that uniquely fosters the development of this part of myself, and I only hope that people don’t take my work too seriously. It is meant to ask where the line is between art and entertainment, meaning and meaninglessness. ‘real lies’ is a collaboration with William Keiser ’19 (@keiserwilhelm). When we were given the opportunity to each create a show that would appear in a joint program, we felt that an integrated project would be more satisfying to work on. I’m now thankful for what feels like a happy accident in our collaboration, as I believe our choreographic endeavors complement one another and make for a more interesting and wholistic show, which together more clearly convey our individual ideas.” — James Jared ’19 (@jam.s_jar.d); photo by Sanneh ’19. “real lies,” Feb 21-23, Hearst Dance Theater #Princetagram @PrincetonArts @DisiacDance @ePrinceton
