ABOUT

Fast fashion is a contemporary phenomenon where retailers capitalize on the latest trends in high fashion by producing clothes quickly and cheaply that emulate styles seen on the runaway. Fast fashion is an incredibly lucrative industry. These companies typically outsource production to factories in countries that have lenient labor laws, leading to exploitation of workers and various human rights abuses. Moreover, fast fashion has become arguably the second largest industry, after oil mining, contributing to environmental pollution because of how much resources are wasted in the process of making these clothes, which are mass produced.

My creative process involves reconstructing and repurposing clothes that I purchase from fast fashion vendors on clearance, usually around 90% off of their original retail value. My work is inspired by my East Asian cultural background as well as general economic and aesthetic trends in fast fashion. My work will culminate in a fashion show on May 1st at 6:30 pm in the Lewis Center Forum. Following that event, my work will be on display in the Lucas Gallery in the Lewis Center at 185 Nassau, where it will be exhibited as a fast fashion retail space.
