The Programs in Theater and Music Theater host a student reading of Hildegard, a new musical in development with collaboration between Princeton alumnae, working artists and current students. Hildegard spans the latter 40 years of the life of Hildegard von Bingen, a 12th-century abbess and someday-saint who was a composer, philosopher, visionary, and pre-Reformation reformer.
The musical tells Hildegard’s story through her own music, remixed and reworked into modern pop arrangements. Act I explores the Christian concept of suffering as the three parts of the Holy Trinity narrate (and intercede in) Hildegard’s journey towards composing the world’s first recorded musical drama. Act II explores faith and justice as Hildegard attempts to reform the Roman Catholic Church from within.
