Raphael Xavier Receives Guggenheim Fellowship

Lecturer in Dance Raphael Xavier has received a 2016 Guggenheim Fellowship for Choreography from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Xavier has been a hip hop dance practitioner since 1983 and made Breaking his career in dance theatre as a choreographer, but he also works in a variety of artistic fields that include photography, film and music. Xavier currently teaches two spring courses for the Program in Dance on “Introduction to Hip Hop Dance” and “Style and Tradition in Hip Hop Culture.”

For 2016, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation awarded Fellowships to a diverse group of 178 scholars, artists, and scientists. Appointed on the basis of prior achievement and exceptional promise, the successful candidates were chosen from a group of nearly 3,000 applicants.
