At the annual Class Day ceremony held on May 29 in the Berlind Theatre at McCarter Theatre Center, the Lewis Center for the Arts recognized graduates who earned certificates through the Programs in Creative Writing, Dance, Theater, Music Theater, and Visual Arts and degrees in the Practice of Art track in the Department of Art & Archaeology. With introductory remarks by Lewis Center Chair Judith Hamera, the ceremony reflected a year of incredible achievements by students researching and practicing their creativity across the disciplines.
Every Class Day is the culmination of both the usual demands of an undergraduate career at Princeton— the challenges, achievements, resilience, and resourcefulness—and those unique to each specific class. Our LCA Class of ’23 has shown us what it means to think deeply about, and creatively negotiate, art making in radically different contexts: from a global pandemic to its long, waning aftermath. You’ve pressed us to become a more genuinely welcoming place, and you’ve surprised us, challenged us, and partnered with us in so many wonderful ways.
—Judith Hamera
Each year the Lewis Center awards three top academic prizes that recognize a number of students for overall achievement in the arts. This year, Hamera announced these honors for six seniors who demonstrated excellence and proficiency in their fields, enlarged the scope of our understanding of issues of race, and embodied a commitment to push boundaries and explore unknown territory. Elliot Lee and Lane Marsh received the Louis Sudler Prize in the Arts; Cassandra James and Camryn Stafford were honored with the Toni Morrison Prize; and Angelica Qin and Amanda Gabrielle Roxas-Chua Qua received the Action Based Community Engagement Award.
Program directors Yiyun Li (Creative Writing), Jane Cox (Theater), and Stacy Wolf (Music Theater) and acting directors Rebecca Lazier (Dance) and Pam Lins (Visual Arts) also shared remarks and announced a number of awards given to seniors for outstanding achievement in each program.
