About

John Venegas Juarez is a natural performer— from dancing Mexican Cumbia to performing Shakespearean monologues, his talents and interests are as diverse as his hometown: the great city of Houston, Texas. John’s involvement with the Lewis Center for the Arts encompasses coursework within the Theater, Music Theater, Dance, and Creative Writing departments. Additionally, he has participated in a variety of performance roles in main-stage productions with the Theater and Music Theater departments.

Most recently, John has taken his love for the arts abroad. This summer, with the help of the Lewis Center, John conducted a month-long exploration of Mexico City’s theater community. Soon thereafter, he found himself in the small town of Gesualdo, Italy— performing in an original musical as a part of the “Musical Theater and Storytelling in Italy” Global Seminar.

John strives to break the status quo and actively incorporates themes of Queerness and Latinidad in his creative work. Additionally, John likes to explore the intersectionality of language and accessibility through his work in literary translation. As a first-generation student, John is firmly committed to the diversity and accessibility of the creative arts. Whether you’ve had years of performing experience behind you, or if you’re barely starting out, John is excited to help you find your space in the arts.

Whenever he is not being a writing-performing extraordinaire, you can probably find John drinking a lavender latte at Coffee Club or petting a random dog on the way to class.
