About

Hello! My name is Maya Keren (she/her) and I am a senior pursuing a concentration in Music with certificates in Music Performance and African American Studies. I play piano, sing, and write music, mostly in service of spending time with people I love. I’m curious about how music—especially music coming from the Black American tradition—is capable of constructing alternate futures that are equitable, queer, compassionate, and beautiful.

I grew up right outside of Philadelphia and spent most of my time in the city, where I listened to and played a lot of live jazz. It was definitely a shift to come to Princeton, which can be a joyful space but also a lonely one. I feel lucky to have found home and collective strength in personal relationships and the small music community here.

At Princeton, I’ve played in both the Jazz Small Groups and the Creative Large Ensemble. I’m also a part of Julien Chang and the Deep Green, an indie-rock band formed with several friends I met freshman year. (Catch us at Terrace this year, hopefully!) When things were normal I also regularly played around the Philly/NJ/NYC area. I work at the Lewis Center at the front desk and have spent perhaps 75% of my waking hours in the complex itself. After three years of living this way you start to find some interesting little nooks and crannies.

I’m so excited to welcome you to the LCA. Please hit me up if you’re wondering whether to take that Atelier class about making sperm move with your mind (do it), if you’re trying to figure out how to get funding, if you’re feeling like you don’t belong at Princeton, if you have a gig and a Dean's Date paper due on the same night, or if you just want someone to hang out with. I’d love to talk.Hello! My name is Maya Keren (she/her) and I am a senior pursuing a concentration in Music with certificates in Music Performance and African American Studies.
