About
Sarah Benson is an Obie Award-winning theater director based in New York City. Recent credits include Teeth by Michael R. Jackson and Anna K. Jacobs (Playwrights Horizons & upcoming New World Stages) for which she received a Drama League nomination for Best Direction, and the musical received Lortel and Outer Circle Critics’ nominations for Best Musical; César Alvarez’s Noise (Northern Stage); Jackie Sibblies Drury’s Fairview (Soho Rep, TFANA & Berkeley Rep), which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Benson was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Best Direction; Suzan-Lori Parks’ In The Blood (Signature Theater) at Soho Rep: Richard Maxwell’s Samara with music by Steve Earle; César Alvarez and The Lisps’ Futurity (ART, Walker Arts Center and in New York with Ars Nova) for which Benson won a Callaway Award for direction, and it won a Lortel Award for best musical; Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' An Octoroon (Soho Rep & TFANA); Lucas Hnath’s A Public Reading of an Unproduced Screenplay About the Death of Walt Disney; Sarah Kane’s Blasted, winner of an OBIE Award and recipient of a Drama Desk nomination; David Adjmi’s Elective Affinities featuring Zoe Caldwell (site-specific).
Benson also directed the opening public performances at the PAC (Perelman), the concert series Refuge, and the award-winning Skittles Commercial: The Broadway Musical (Townhall) for the 2019 Super Bowl. Benson is the recipient of a Vilcek Prize. She was a Director of Soho Rep from 2007 - 2023, and during her tenure the company garnered 16 Obie awards and a Drama Desk Award for Sustained Excellence.
