A Note from the Thesis Proposer

I first read Proof about five years ago, as a lonely, nerdy high schooler, and it immediately spoke to me: I was excited by the feminist aspects, and I deeply felt the isolation and desire to be taken seriously. In my years at Princeton, the play changed for me: I made friends, realized I wasn’t a math genius, and came to conclusions about my mental health my younger self couldn’t have imagined. But I still love the play, and as I apply to graduate school (in astronomy and planetary science) and look forward to an academic career, the need to check in with myself and see if I really am okay mentally is more important than ever. I hope you will remember to check in on yourselves too; and I hope that the academia of the future can prioritize our health over our output.

I want to thank everyone who made this play possible: Vivia for taking on this project, giving so many valuable insights, and helping me grow as an actor; Cassy, Ethan, and Jay for putting so much of themselves into their characters and creating such a strong ensemble; Lydia and Frank for all their hard work stage managing and keeping us on track; Saareen and Joye for their beautiful design work; Frank and Joye again for teaching us about the math department; Ricky for supporting me always in everything and letting me draft him as my set designer; the theater department for all they have done to make this show possible; and my family, for their everlasting support and willingness to fly to New Jersey every time I’m in a play.

And thank you for coming! I hope you enjoy Proof.
