Introduction to Theater Making

Introduction to Theater Making is a working laboratory, which gives students hands-on experience with theater’s fundamental building blocks — writing, design, acting, directing, and producing. Throughout the semester, students read, watch and discuss five different plays, music theater pieces and ensemble theater works. We will analyze how these plays are constructed and investigate their social and political implications. In-class artistic responses provide hands-on exploration as students work in groups to create and rehearse performances inspired by our course texts.

Prerequisites and Restrictions

Absolutely no experience required. For Fall 2024 only, this course is by application. This application is intended to preserved needed spaces for sophomores, juniors and seniors pursuing the minor who are required to take this class. First year undergraduates are also encouraged to apply, and we have saved spots in the class for you. In the spring of 2025, the course will resume open enrollment.

Other Information

Most rehearsals will take place during the allotted class time; but students should expect to spend some time outside of class in small groups preparing theatrical projects. There is a final theatrical project for performance in class, prepared during the last two weeks of classes. There are oral presentations which are shorter group projects created every 2 weeks and discussion based upon class readings.

Course Application

Students who apply by the end of day Sunday, April 14, 2024, will hear about enrollment on Monday, April 15. Applications received after April 14 will be considered if space remains available or opens up in the class.
