Introduction to Theater Making

Introduction to Theater Making is a working laboratory, which gives students hands-on experience with theater’s fundamental building blocks—writing, design, acting, directing, and producing. Throughout the semester, students read, watch and discuss five different theater works. We will analyze how these plays and events are constructed and investigate their social and political implications. In-class artistic responses provide hands-on exploration as students work in groups to create and rehearse performances inspired by our course texts.

Distribution Area: LA

Prerequisites and Restrictions

Absolutely no experience required. However, the course is currently by application. This application is intended to preserved needed spaces for first-years, sophomores and juniors pursuing the minor who are required to take this class. We will gladly accept other students as space permits.

Other Information

Most rehearsals will take place during the allotted class time; but students should expect to spend some time outside of class in small groups preparing theatrical projects. There is a final theatrical project for performance in class, prepared during the last two weeks of classes. There are oral presentations which are shorter group projects created every 2 weeks and discussion based upon class readings.

Course Application

Students who apply by the end of day on Sunday, April 13, will hear about enrollment on Monday, April 14. Applications received after April 13 will be considered if space remains available or opens up in the class.
