Joy Returns Home: Dance of the African Diaspora and Traditions of Unity, is a three day workshop series featuring Princeton Alumni Terrie Ajile Axam ‘73. Centering Afro-diasporic dance traditions of unity through the cultural arts, the series features the Sympoh Urban Arts breakdancing crew, Ethiopian and Eritrean traditional styles, and Axam’s signature form, Mojah. Each workshop will include historical presentations of the movement’s form and function. Following two Mojah intensives, where Axam will share the history and technique of her form, a community showcase on Saturday will feature several signature pieces from Axam’s repertoire. This series highlights African-American and Afro-diasporic storytelling and embodied knowledge within a diverse array of dance traditions, exploring the beautiful plurality of black cultural arts.
