The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) announced the 2023 Circle of Excellence Award winners, including a Bronze Award for The Visible Wild, a video project led by the Lewis Center’s multimedia specialist Zohar Lavi-Hasson.
What does it mean to always be watching? Do animals deserve the right of privacy? Does art have to be beautiful? In spring of 2022, students in the visual arts/environmental sciences course “The Visible Wild” asked themselves these questions and more as they explored wildlife habitats adjacent to Princeton’s campus. Led by Director and Professor of Visual Arts Jeff Whetstone, students watched nature both in person and by trail camera, studying animal populations and behavior with the goal of creating artworks from their field research and raw material from the wild.
The Visible Wild video project tells a compelling story of cross-disciplinary investigation for students interested in environmental science and visual art, and provides rare and inspiring glimpses of the “invisible wild” around the Princeton campus. In the award announcement, CASE judges cited the video concept as “clever and engaging,” also noting how they were captivated by the “unique approach to showcasing an academic course through the delightful combination of trail cameras and baby foxes.”
The Lewis Center’s Office of Communications has earned several CASE awards in past years for their work in print and digital media and video communications.
CASE’s Circle of Excellence Awards are the premier recognition program for educational advancement. These peer-selected and adjudicated awards honor colleges, universities, and schools worldwide whose talented staff have advanced their organizations with resourcefulness and ingenuity.
In 2023, CASE received more than 4,000 entries from 583 educational institutions located across 22 countries. Of those, volunteer judges chose 521 exemplary entries to receive bronze, silver, gold, or Grand Gold recognition. The awards’ 96 categories span all advancement disciplines, from magazines and publications to fundraising campaigns and alumni initiatives, to special events, marketing, leadership, video, and more. Winners were selected based on several factors, including overall quality, innovation, use of resources and the impact on the institution or its external and internal communities.
