Legendary Comic Artist and Princeton Alumnus Jim Lee ’86 Leads Illustration Workshop for Students

On October 21, world-renowned comic book artist, writer, editor, publisher, and Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment Jim Lee ’86 demonstrated his craft in a workshop held for Princeton undergraduate students at 185 Nassau Street. Through a series of illustration exercises, Lee introduced the student participants to a variety of drawing styles and techniques. Known for his incredibly detailed and dynamic artistic style, Lee is one of the most revered and respected artists in American comics. The wider University community was invited to observe the workshop, which was presented by the Center for Career Development in partnership with the Lewis Center for the Arts.

Prior to the workshop, students were able to meet and talk with Lee about his career at a networking breakfast held in the Hagan Gallery.

Lee started his professional career at Marvel Comics, where his work on the X-Men continues to hold the all-time record for single-issue sales—8 million copies sold in one month. In 1998, he joined the DC Entertainment creative team. Lee was integral in the launch of DC Entertainment’s New 52 initiative, designing the new, more contemporary costumes for some of the DC universe’s most iconic characters, including Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. A veritable legend in the industry, Lee has received numerous accolades and recognition for his work. He has been a member of the Lewis Center for the Arts Advisory Council since 2018.
