About

Sarah Charlesworth (1947 - 2013) is a visual artist and photographer whose work addresses the language of photography in contemporary culture.

Charlesworth’s work has been exhibited widely in the U.S. and abroad. With over 50 individual exhibitions, a traveling retrospective (organized by SITE Santa Fe), and presence in many major museum exhibitions, Charlesworth is one of the seminal figures whose work has been instrumental in bridging the gap between fine art and a critical practice of photography.  Her work appears in numerous public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and the Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, Holland. Her work is also included in many university collections including Princeton University Art Museum, Yale University Art Gallery, and the Berkeley Art Museum. She is the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts Grants and a Guggenheim Fellowship.

Charlesworth was appointed to the faculty of Princeton University in 2012. She taught on the graduate level for 20 years in the MFA Photography program at the School of Visual Arts and the MFA Photography Department at the Rhode Island School of Design. She lived and worked both in New York City and in the Berkshires area of Northwestern Connecticut.
