About
Daniel Bauer has worked closely with architects, curators and historians documenting landscapes and urban conditions. He uses photographic media to detect unseen tectonic fissures in our psychosocial landscape – hidden dormant histories that linger beneath surface much the way latent images do in a long forgotten photographic emulsion. When Daniel’s work works, it functions as evidence yet destabilizes clearcut meaning. He embraces photography’s ability to confound traditional notions of authorship, originality, and artistic agency fluctuating freely between dialectical attitudes of I make the world and the world makes me.
His images have borrowed from the traditions of nineteenth century European travel photography, sometimes reading as political documents, but are in fact a continuing dialogue with place. He uses a variety of cameras; from slow static large format analogue field cameras to speedy and stealthy mobile digital devices that are deployed and assimilated into hybrid workflows of still and moving images.
Daniel has exhibited Internationally in venues such as The Israel Museum Jerusalem, KW Institute for Contemporary Art Berlin, Kunstinstituut Melly formally known as Witte de With Rotterdam, The Israeli Pavilion at the Venice Biennale of Architecture and in galleries in Tel Aviv, NewYork, Chicago and Milwaukee. He received a BFA from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design and an MFA from Columbia University. His work has appeared in many scholarly books and journals. He has curated group exhibitions such as "Party Beuys or What Comes After Farce"(2015) in New York.
Daniel has taught at The Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, SUNY Purchase, The City College of New York and Baruch College.
