About
Hello! My name is Leila Abou-Jaoude and I’m from Lexington, Kentucky. I am a rising junior in the Music Department and the Program in Music Theater.
I have always been passionate about the arts — all of them.
I love that here at Princeton, the study of the arts is collaborative — not compartmentalized. Cross-listed courses are an easy way to explore new disciplines (often while fulfilling distribution requirements)! I’ve taken courses that have taught me how to code music and invent different tuning systems, how to use ratios and mathematical principles to build instruments, and how to weave electronics into fabric and create interactive costumes.
In addition to offering multidisciplinary courses, LCA provides incredible, intensive opportunities. LCA Atelier courses allow you to learn from established and rising professional artists. During my freshman fall I took an Atelier course with Jason Robert Brown. We workshopped his new musical, The Connector, and performed in a reading. LCA courses often take trips to performances — I have been able to attend show after show in New York — all of which have been paid for by Princeton.
Still, you don’t have to be in class to explore an artistic discipline! Student arts groups are a great way to get involved in new creative endeavors. I have performed in PUP’s (Princeton University Players) student-run productions, while simultaneously writing for The Playwright’s Guild (a student theater company) and playing the violin in Sinfonia.
Too busy to be involved in the arts during the school year? LCA will also fund summer projects and internships. I spent the summer after my freshman year at the McCarter Theatre, serving as their Summer Education and Engagement Intern.
Don’t be hesitant to jump right into the arts community at LCA! You will be met with open arms — no matter your level of experience. I would love to chat about the arts at Princeton. I can provide insight into how to select courses, how to get involved with both student groups and the department, how to find and create opportunities, and how to make the most of your Princeton experience!
