New musicals do not emerge from their authors’ minds fully formed: they are assembled, piece by piece, by a village of collaborators who must work together to address a wide variety of practical and dramaturgical problems in the name of telling a story. How does a music director contribute to that conversation? Join Broadway music director Andrea Grody ’11 for a workshop that explores the questions to ask and the assumptions to challenge about music as a new piece of musical theater is made. Whatever your musical background may be, you will learn new ways of thinking about music’s function within the context of musical theater.

ABOUT
ANDREA GRODY is a music director, arranger, and composer with a focus on developing new work. She is the Music Director, Music Supervisor, and Additional Arranger for the Broadway musical THE BAND’S VISIT, winner of 10 Tony Awards including Best Musical. She is also the Music Director and Vocal Arranger for the new musical adaptation of TOOTSIE, opening on Broadway in spring 2019.
Andrea music directed the world premiere of Public Works’ AS YOU LIKE IT at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, the world premiere of CAKE OFF at the Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA, and the New York premiere of THE GREAT IMMENSITY at the Public Theater. She was Associate Music Director for the world premieres of THE FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE (Public Theater/Dallas Theater Center) and UNKNOWN SOLDIER (Williamstown Theatre Festival) and for the New York premiere of VENICE (Public Theater). Other favorite projects include ROBIN HOOD at the Williamstown Theatre Festival (as Composer/Music Director), LOVE’S LABOUR’S LOST at the Delacorte (as Music Associate/Marching Band Arranger), BY THE NUMBERS and PORTRAITS with Prospect Theater Company, WHITE CHRISTMAS and SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD at Northern Stage, and several workshops of Tectonic Theater Project’s CARMEN: AN AFRO-CUBAN JAZZ MUSICAL by Moisés Kaufman and Arturo O’Farrill (as Vocal Arranger/Associate Music Adaptor).
Andrea’s writing credits include the full-length musical STRANGE FACES, which she wrote and directed as her senior thesis at Princeton, and several songs for The Civilians’ Let Me Ascertain You series, which have been performed at Joe’s Pub, Le Poisson Rouge, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her other compositions include a commission from the PRISM Saxophone Quartet, two commissions from the Kingswood-Oxford Octopipers, and incidental music for two plays at Theatre Intime.
Andrea graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Princeton, where she majored in Music and earned a certificate in Theater. She holds a Master’s degree with Highest Honors in Musical Theatre Music Directing from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. She is an Associate Voice Teacher at New York Vocal Coaching, and she is currently developing an online music-learning platform for singers.
