How do artists make art? How do we evaluate it? In this course, students of all levels get to experience firsthand the particular challenges and rewards of art making through practical engagement with five fields – Creative Writing, Visual Art, Theater, Dance, and Music – under the guidance of professionals. Two-week units introduce each field and involve “lab” experience in each. In class, we will focus on the basic principles of aesthetics, with the ultimate goal of designing, collaborating on, and critiquing original projects across disciplines and media. Full attendance is mandatory.

- Incredible class. The opportunity to try out a variety of disciplines is a special treat, and the LCA 101 professors have a great time helping you through it. Basically no homework, it’s a fantastic way to learn about the arts and have fun while doing it. I’d recommend it for literally anybody.
- This course is a super fun and chill class if you want to balance out your heavy course schedule. There is not much homework. The course takes you through the different arts and is super fun! Easy in terms of work required, however, you still learn a lot by being creative and collaborating with people of all years.
- This class has a heavy focus on the application of art so there is not much homework. That being said, the professors of each unit are very knowledgeable in their fields so if you are engaging and open in class the course will be very enjoyable for you. I personally loved it and putting together the final performance was so much fun!
- This is a great class to take if you need a class that is not super time consuming outside of the course, and I thought was a nice break from other classes – allows you to be creative in many ways.
- TAKE. THIS. CLASS. It really takes you out of your comfort zone and you get to meet so many people who are also inexperienced with some of the art forms and you just get to dive in and enjoy what each has to offer. 🙂
- Really great course! manageable workload and great for a 5th course.
- This course was absolutely incredible. Literally every aspect was awesome. Professors were so welcoming and understanding, and they always encouraged growth without expecting excellence. If I ever struggled, had questions, or didn’t know what to do, they were super helpful, and all students and staff involved were heavily engaged and respectful of others. Amazing. Warning: this class WILL make you want to quit your major and only take art courses until you graduate. It was so, so, so fun and rejuvenating, and I loved that it was PDF only. You don’t need to be particularly talented; you just need to consistently show up and allow yourself to learn and enjoy. I wish I could take this course again.
- This is a very fun course. It is a very nice place to take a break and make some art in a supportive environment.
