In her 1979 address “The Master’s Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master’s House,” Audre Lorde stated, “Without community there is no liberation, only the most vulnerable and temporary armistice between an individual and her oppression.” Food is an intersection of layered systems of power within our global society; at once, eating is both one of the most intimate and the most political actions we each engage in every day. Sharing a meal in community is a profound act and tool for connection, representing an event and an opportunity for reflection on relationships between self, others, place, and time. In a world of climate emergency, food insecurity looms as a risk multiplier, threatening already vulnerable populations and exacerbating socio-economic and racial inequities that will have the largest direct effect on the bodies of Black and Indigenous folks. This project by Princeton senior Magdalena Poost seeks to engage with the communal ritual of sharing food as an opening for rest as resistance, queer pleasure in the face of strife, and memory of lost care. I made this for you is a three-pronged artistic practice: first, a series of shared public meals around campus; second, an oral history project collecting remembered stories of shared meals gone by and meals/foods that are lost to us; and finally, this event: a culminating final public meal performance based on food, memory, care, queerness, and utopia. RSVP and join us for this final public offering, with refreshments provided!
