Marivaux, an 18th century French playwright, is known for his sophisticated and light romantic comedies. Yet, under the appearance of comedy lie much deeper layers of meaning. Themes of class warfare, battle of the sexes and gender questions arise. Marivaux’s work has been compared to Choderlos de Laclos’s Dangerous Liaisons.

In the spring 2024 Princeton Atelier course, “Performing Marivaux,” students worked alongside theater director Guillaume Vincent and Professor of the Practice Florent Masse to create adaptations of two of Marivaux’s pieces. In The False Servant, a woman cross-dresses as a man to avenge her sex. In The Constant Players, a cast of amateur actors work to produce a piece in one day and the distinctions between reality and fiction begin to blur. The course will culminate in this end of class presentation of both works by two distinct casts. Experience Marivaux’s universe as adapted by these Princeton students!
